Zakat Recipients

For the year 2004, $13.924 million have been disbursed from the Zakat collection. As stated in the Holy Quran,

"Alms are for the poor and the needy; and those employed to administer the funds; for those whose hearts have been recently reconciled to the truth; for those in bondage and in debt; in the cause of Allah; and for the wayfarer" -
At-Tawbah: 60

The details of the eight categories of people who have been describe in the Holy Quran as entitled to receive Zakat are:

Fakir - One who has neither material possession nor means of livelihood; one who suffers, and has no means to sustain his daily needs.

 


Miskin - One with insufficient means of livelihood to meet his basic needs.

In 2004, 2020 families received $3.89 million in the form of Financial Assistance, given monthly or in other forms. The funds are used to pay for necessities such as food, bills for utility and medical.

Amil - One who is appointed to collect Zakat and the expenses incurred in the administration of Zakat.

Muallaf - One who recently embraced Islam.

Assistance is being forwarded to new Muslim converts. New Converts are given allowance and training to understand the meaning of being a Muslim.

Riqab - One who wants to free himself from the bondage or shackles of slavery.

In Singapore, Zakat due from this category of recipients is spent on those who need help to pursue their education.

Recipients in this category also include the assistance to the children’s of the poor and needy and their expenses.

Gharimin - One who is in debt but needs assistance to meet his/her basic needs.

Zakat can be given to a person who is in debt to meet his/her basic needs. Examples of such debts are arrears in utility bills, conservancy charges as well as medical and school fees. Only those under the Fakir & Miskin categories will be considered for Gharimin.

Fisabilillah – Those who strive in the cause of Allah for the betterment of the community.

This is a common word used in relation to all good deeds but in particular, it means rendering help to an endeavor to raise aloft the banner of God’s religion.

Ibnissabil – Stranded travelers on a permissible journey.
