Collection from zakat needs to be disbursed to the beneficiaries. If the elderly woman falls under either fakir or miskin group, and she did not received any expenses, she is entitled to the disbursement. However, it's advisable to hand over the money to MUIS as the administrator for zakat matters. This is to ensure a proper and systematic disbursement method. With regards to the elderly woman case, you can refer to MUIS for continuous assistance.

Question 2
During Hari Raya Aidil Fitri, we come across parents who give money to their kids and said "This is zakat money". Is this a misconception?

Answer 2
Zakat is an imperative contribution (those who fail to do so will be considered to have sinned) that has to be given out from those who are financially stable after it reaches the necessary nisab (minimum amount set monthly by MUIS) and haul (one year). Zakat has to be divided among 8 beneficiaries.

On the other hand, infak contribution or sedakah is just a sunnah and can be performed at any time and to whoever that we wish to gift to. The money that is given out during Hari Raya is termed as gift or sedakah. It cannot be regarded as zakat.

Question 3
Can I disburse zakat to my relatives who are miskin?

Question 4
Can I undertake the disbursement of zakat myself and find the 8 beneficiaries myself?

Answer 4
Zakat is, in a way, an Islamic economic infrastructure. Its main objective is to overcome the socio-economic conundrum of Islamic society. That is the reason why zakat has to be paid to amil, appointed by governing body such as MUIS, and distributed evenly among the 8 beneficiaries. The governing body not only is responsible for the well being of the society, but also to Allah SWT. During Prophet Mohammad's era, he collected the zakat and appointed the amil himself. The same practice is followed during the reign of the Caliph.

As zakat has to be evenly distributed among the 8 beneficiaries, it is crucial that to have a computation system that are both efficient and precise. Therefore, it may be difficult to distribute the zakat by oneself. In economic of scale, it is something unavailing and it will be difficult to address the socio-economic issues thoroughly.

Answer 5

Question 6
Do each beneficiary entitled an equal share of the disbursement, which is 1/8 for each beneficiary? Can it be divided to only 3 or 4 beneficiaries only?

Answer 6
Zakat is the third of the five pillars of Islam. Zakat is also an obligation to those who meet its requirement, and it has to be done appropriately. Therefore, it is better to be distributed to the 8 beneficiaries. However, the disbursement can be made to 3 or 4 beneficiaries if the remaining beneficiaries are not available.
